SDH Australia

Innovative HVO Processing Technology

SDH Australia delivers patented technology transforming waste oils into cost-effective renewable diesel, advancing circular economy and Australia’s net-zero transition.

Executive Snapshot

SDH Australia  presents a patented processing technology that revolutionises Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) production. By efficiently converting underutilised waste feedstocks such as grease trap waste into renewable diesel, the technology significantly reduces costs and delivers high-quality, verifiable fuels. This innovation aligns perfectly with Australia’s circular economy objectives, enhances fuel security, and supports the net-zero transition.

The Challenge

  • Unsustainable Feedstock Supply: Global competition and ethical concerns limit supply of bio-feedstocks like canola, tallow, and imported used cooking oil.

  • High Production Costs: Traditional HVO production relies on expensive methanol and struggles with rancid oils and fats, often rendering waste feedstocks uneconomical.

Australia needs a domestic, sustainable, and cost-effective solution to meet growing demand for renewable fuels in heavy transport, mining, construction, aviation, and shipping.

Our Solution

Patented, Cost-Effective Processing Technology

  • Transforms Problematic Waste Streams: Converts grease trap waste (abundant, low-cost, ~200–250 tons/day in Melbourne) and rancid oils into renewable diesel.
  • Reduces Production Costs: Generates methanol in-situ by reacting natural gas with the oxygen in rancid oils/fats. Cutting methanol input costs.
  • Delivers High-Quality Fuel: Proven at pilot scale (100 litres/hour plant), producing diverse, high-specification diesel fuels tested over years of use.

Market Opportunity & Impact

  • National Decarbonisation: HVO reduces lifecycle GHG emissions by up to 90–99%.

  • Policy Alignment: Supports the Federal Government’s $1.1 billion Cleaner Fuels Program and NSW’s Renewable Fuel Scheme.

  • Industry Demand: BHP, Marr Contracting, ACCIONA, Laing O’Rourke, Cleanaway, and Volvo are already trialling or adopting HVO.

  • Circular Economy Leadership: Converts waste into value, avoids food vs fuel conflict, and enhances local energy security.

Strategic Alignment

  • Australian Sustainable Finance Roadmap & Taxonomy: Enables low-carbon fuel production and circular economy outcomes.

  • UN SDGs: SDG 7 (Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry & Innovation), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption), SDG 13 (Climate Action).

  • 2035 Targets: Direct contribution to Australia’s emissions reduction goals.

Investment & Partnerships

  • SDH Australia seeks strategic partners and investors to scale and license this proven technology. Opportunities include collaboration with:

    • Biofuel producers

    • Waste management entities
